Live and Study at the Most Beautiful University in China
Renowned as one of the best universities in China, Xiamen University, with a picturesque campus by the sea, is a wonderful place to study and live.
Xiamen University is arguably the most enchanting university in mainland China, as the long queue of tourists lining up outside the gate every day during school vacations attests. Founded by Chinese Singaporean Tan Kah Kee, the campus boasts picturesque landscapes, elegantly designed teaching buildings and accommodations, and several majestically spacious athletic fields. Walking alongside the Lotus Lake in campus, I always feel like I am touring around an amazing park, as the campus’ lakes are also black swans’ favorite habitats. XMU offers a nice orientation for college freshmen to experience a bit of the energetic campus life. Check out the renowned graffiti tunnel where the students' imagination is unleashed and Valentine's Valley, a romantic corner for young lovers on campus. In addition, registered students have free accesses to not only the golf courses, but also the over 20 campus canteens. To feel the breeze from the sea, I also love to ride my bicycle on the Baicheng Beach and Huandao Road, which circles around the island routing the must-see and most enjoyable places in Xiamen. Heading east along the coastline brings me to the beach of Zengcuo'an, a booming fishing village where stylish guesthouses, inns and seafood restaurants cram together.
Being a student at Xiamen University, I would never feel bored on academic studies. XMU offers 31 doctoral degrees in first-class disciplines, and 50 Master degrees in first-class disciplines, the university offers 83 undergraduate programs, 276 graduate programs, and 187 Ph.D programs. A great number of subjects are ranked first in China, including Accounting, Chemical Engineering, Statistics, Advertising, etc. Therefore, it offers students opportunities to take elective courses from other disciplines. Take me as an instance. As a policy majored student, I earned my double degree of law & economics, and minored in Finance & Accounting, while, out of interests, I have also taken plenty courses related to medical science, astronomy, psychology, and performing arts.
One more to mention, XMU did pay huge attention on students’ creativity and social responsibility. When I was a freshman, I and my classmates initiated a waste recycling fundraiser. With the money raised by collecting and selling used plastic, we donated education and sports facilities for children in a remote village of Wumeng Mountain, one of the most underdeveloped border regions in China. Facing the lack of human and financial resources, we were forced to keep adjusting plans and mobilizing various involved groups. Through advertising our project, cooperating with the media and lobbying the local government, our team greatly reverse the situation and build the first basketball court for the beneficiary primary school. With the university’s support, public attention and the National Propaganda Ministry’s recognition, our fund-raising project gradually developed into a region-wide campaign calling citizens’ action on waste recycling and vulnerable groups caring.
Overall, Xiamen University is somehow more like a heaven for its students, and I do have had so many precious memories at such an amazing university.
